To retire from music or NOT to retire from music? That’s the question on Nicki Minaj’s mind these days! So what’s really going on??
What’s up guys, I’m Emile Ennis Jr. with Clevver News and it’s the question that’s been bugging fans too, ever since the rapper announced that she was giving up the music industry. Remember this tweet?
On September 5th, the Anaconda rapper wrote:
I’ve decided to retire & have my family. I know you guys are happy now. To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me, in the box- cuz ain’t nobody checkin me. Love you for LIFE
But to be honest, we’ve all been a little confused since this announcement. For starters, she quickly deleted that tweet. And just a couple weeks later, Nicki seemingly broke her retirement by releasing the track “Fendi” with PnB Rock and Murda Beats.
Oh, and there was this tweet which seemed to backtrack the whole retirement announcement. She apologized to an angry fan writing:
I’m still right here. Still madly in love with you guys & you know that. In hindsight, this should’ve been a Queen Radio discussion & it will be. I promise u guys will be happy. No guests, just us talking about everything. The tweet was abrupt & insensitive, I apologize babe.
Confused yet? Yeah… you’re not the only one. So what is REALLY happening with Nicki Minaj’s music career. Well, luckily, the rapper cleared a few things up in her newest interview with Billboard.
“I love music and interacting with fans, so I can’t really see taking myself completely away. But I want to be open to other possibilities in my life. I do believe it is important to become a woman outside of the magnifying glass. I have to make sure that I’m well-rounded as a human being… I have to make sure that I’m well-rounded as a human being.”
Ok, before we dive into her career a little more, it’s worth pausing to chat about Nicki’s personal life. Afterall, this retirement is about family, and she’s got a new one!
On October 21, the 37 year old rapper announced via instagram that she had married Kenneth Petty. She showed fans cute little bride and groom hats and Mr. and Mrs. mugs.
Nicki and Kenneth dated for several months before making their relationship instagram official in December of last year. That’s when the drama started…
See, fans quickly discovered that Kenneth is a registered sex offender, having been convicted of rape in 1994 when he was 16. He served just under four years in prison. He went back to prison for another seven years after being for first degree manslaughter in 2006 and was released on parole in 2013.
YIKES!
But Nicki wasn’t having ANY of the backlash over her relationship. She defended her then boyfriend responding to an instagram comment with this:
He was 15, she was 16… in a relationship. But go awf Internet. y’all can’t run my life. Y’all can’t even run y’all own life. Thank you boo.
In fact, Nicki defended Kenneth several times on social media:
And well, Kenneth’s controversial path didn’t stop the rapper from saying “I do” a little under a year later. Though they had a secret, low key wedding, Nicki revealed on her Queen Radio show:
“I have to work on my album and I have a lot to focus on that I don’t want to do the big wedding now. We’ll do the big wedding later.”
And what about that family? Kenneth reportedly has five children, but the couple definitely plans on having one of their own. Nicki’s been VERY open about wanting a baby. She told Entertainment Tonight last year:
“I’ve got to get married first then I’ll have a child. I might be closer than people think actually. I love children. I’m not going to put that off for much longer.”
And even though she said she was done with music, she recently talked about new stuff, including an upcoming collaboration with Adele… yes THAT Adele! Plus a few other things.
But the pesky “retirement” issue is holding her back…
Ok so it looks like Nicki herself is just as confused as the rest of us here on her OWN career!
Anybody got answers for us? Anyone… Or is this all semantics at this point? Cause bottom line: Nicki Minaj ain’t going anywhere, anytime soon! And we’re definitely not mad about that.
