One city that has taken steps to change is Newark in the state of New Jersey.
Its police force was dogged by corruption in the past – but after swift intervention – was transformed.
In 2020, officers didn’t fire a single gunshot. Newark now wants to be a model for better community policing – but not all residents agree it’s working.
