Conservative Owen Paterson has quit as an MP following the controversy over his suspension from the Commons for lobbying.
The North Shropshire MP said he was leaving the “cruel world of politics”.
The former Northern Ireland Secretary was found to have breached Commons rules by lobbying for two companies – Randox and Lynn’s Country Foods – which employed him as a paid consultant.
The government yesterday overturned the decision to suspend him from the Commons but was forced to row back on that ruling today.
