PM announces 1.25% National Insurance rise to pay for social care in England

The Prime Minister has announced a new ‘health and social care levy’ to directly fund the NHS and social care in England.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Boris Johnson said too many governments had “ducked this problem for decades” but “there can be no more dither or delay”.

It means National Insurance contributions will rise by 1.25%.

The new levy is expected to raise £36billon over three years for services in England – and money will also be sent to support healthcare services in the devolved governments of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
