Russia’s Fires Are So Out of Control They’re Melting Polar Ice Caps

As temperatures reached a record 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the Russian Arctic this summer, the shrubs, grasses and mosses of the tundra started to burn. That’s an entirely new source of planet-warming carbon, as well as methane from thawing permafrost. Soot from these fires also helps melt polar sea ice.
