Scientists have finally pieced together the map of Zealandia, Earth’s mysterious eighth continent, a vast landmass hidden almost entirely beneath the Pacific Ocean. Stretching across millions of square miles, Zealandia is roughly 94% submerged, with New Zealand and New Caledonia among the few parts rising above sea level. For decades, geologists have studied its unusual rocks, ancient continental crust, and geological boundaries to understand how this enormous region separated from the supercontinent Gondwana. In 2023, researchers published a major milestone by mapping the geology of the continent’s underwater extent, revealing new details about its structure and ancient past. But how can a continent remain hidden beneath the ocean for so long, and what could Zealandia’s secrets reveal about the forces that shaped Earth itself?
