Selena Gomez just opened up about her family’s undocumented immigration story and is using her platform to raise awareness for the immigration crisis that the U.S. is facing.
What’s up guys? It’s Sussan Mourad here with Clevver News and Selena Gomez just wrote an in depth and emotional article for Time Magazine about her family’s undocumented immigration experience.
She revealed that she finds it tremendously upsetting to witness the ongoing immigration crisis in our country.
In the first paragraph of her essay, Selena said quote, “When I read the news headlines or see debates about immigration rage on social media, I feel afraid for those in similar situations. I feel afraid for my country.”
She tells the story of how her aunt and grandparents crossed the border to come into the United States and have worked extremely hard to gain citizenship.
She said quote, “In the 1970s, my aunt crossed the border from Mexico to the United States hidden in the back of a truck. My grandparents followed, and my father was born in Texas soon after. In 1992, I was born a U.S. citizen thanks to their bravery and sacrifice.”
Clearly, this is a topic that is extremely close to Selena’s heart and she said that undocumented immigration is on her mind every single day.
She never forgets how blessed she is to have been born in this country.
She went on to explain that immigration isn’t just a political issue, she said quote, “Immigration goes beyond politics and headlines. It is a human issue, affecting real people, dismantling real lives. How we deal with it speaks to our humanity, our empathy, our compassion. How we treat our fellow human beings defines who we are.”
And while Selena admits she isn’t exactly an expert on the subject, she is still spreading a very important message.
She said quote, “I don’t claim to be an expert. I’m not a politician, I’m not a doctor, and I don’t work in the system at all. I understand it’s flawed and that we need rules and regulations, but we also have to remember that our country was formed by people who came here from other countries.”
And many fans are thanking Selena on social media for speaking out about these issues.
One person tweeted quote, “Have y’all seen the essay Selena Gomez wrote on Immigration Crisis?? I WAS SPEECHLESS! It’s so beautifully written! Take some time out of your day, I promise it’s worth it ?”
And another said quote, “Another reason out of many to LOVE ms. Selena Marie Gomez.. ?? what a beautiful heart. Honestly beyond grateful for her. Proud to call her my idol.”
But obviously this is a complex issue with multiple sides, so there were some people who wanted to point out flaws in Selena’s essay.
One person said quote, “@SelenaGomez With all due respect ma’am, our country was formed by people who immigrated and forced the natives off their land. Have you studied the Native American culture and seen what they endured from immigrants? I’m not against immigration, just remember the facts.”
But these issues are more important to Selena than just one Time Mag article.
Along with the essay, she is executive producing the new Netflix docu-series called “Living Undocumented,” which comes out today.
And we all know that this isn’t Selena’s first time executive producing a show with Netflix.
She’s the E.P. of 13 Reasons Why with her mom which was a passion project of hers.
Selena was extremely involved in Season 1 of the show, and according to the Hollywood Reporter, she still serves as an EP on 13 Reason Why Seasons 2 & 3 and is involved with the behind the scenes.
And one person said what we’re all thinking, quote, “Selena Gomez dropping a trailer for her self produced documentary about immigration in America the day Justin Bieber releases his wedding photos is just a power move we love to see”
I for one am absolutely in awe of Selena and the fact that she is using her platform and voice for a cause she is passionate about is just remarkable.
I definitely want to know what you guys think of Selena’s latest project and the potential impact it will have on immigration in the US.
