Starmer accuses government of being 'complacent' about Taliban threat

The Labour leader tells MPs there has been a ‘major miscalculation of the resilience of the Afghan forces’ by the government.

Sir Keir Starmer adds that “the result is that the Taliban are now back in control of Afghanistan”.

He also recalls his days as director of public prosecutions and the dangers faced by prosecutors in Afghanistan.

Starmer also claims that Boris Johnson’s last visit to Afghanistan, as foreign secretary in 2018, was to avoid a Commons vote on Heathrow.
