Ireland’s national police, the Garda Síochána, told the Independent that it was aware of an “unusual volume of activity” at ATMs across the county. An IT error with the online app allowed customers to transfer up to $1,000...

Maui residents slam slow federal response to wildfires: ‘The last to be thought of’

News- US
http://youtu.be/bgmkgv-tttk Hawaiians have been forced to take charge of their own wildfire recovery efforts in light of what some are blasting as an incredibly slow response by the federal government. Professional surfer and Maui resident Kai Lenny said he and others sprang into action and got “boots on the ground” on the devastated west side of the island instead of waiting for the feds any longer. “For some of us we were kind of sitting back, waiting for help to arrive and then nothing was sort of happening. We were just in shock,” Lenny told CBS News. “I haven’t seen one state, one county, one federal official at any one of the donation hubs where people are most suffering,” Lenny continued. “As soon as you go to the west side, all of a sudden, you’re like, ‘Wow, why do I feel like...

Shane Treu, 49, filmed flames coming from a wooden power pole that snapped under high winds early Aug. 8 — just hours before the wildfire that has killed more than 100 people was confirmed as taking hold in now-devastated Lahaina. “I heard ‘buzz, buzz’ … It was almost like somebody lit a firework,” the resort worker recalled of the live line sizzling and popping on dry grass outside his home. “It just ran straight up the hill to a bigger pile of grass and then, with that high wind, that fire was blazing,” he said. “In a matter of minutes, that whole place was just engulfed.” Read more at https://ny...

Shocking footage reveals devastation left by Maui wildfires

News- US
http://youtu.be/DLy8UyqLK1M At least 55 people have died after the island of Maui was engulfed by intense wildfire flames that reduced entire neighborhoods to ashes, officials said — and the death toll is only expected to rise. Officials are still surveying the extensive damage, but already expect the tragedy to become the state’s deadliest natural disaster since a 1961 tsunami killed 61 people on the Big Island. The blazes decimated large swaths of the island, including more than 1,000 structures in the historic sector of Lahaina, where tourists had shopped and dined just days before. Rubble and blackened foundations lie where popular destination spots and landmarks stood, and torched boats were found still smoldering in the harbor, according to Hawaii Gov. Josh Green. “Lahaina, with...

The Russian lunar lander is expected to reach the moon on Aug. 23, about the same day as an Indian craft which was launched on July 14. The Russian spacecraft will take about 5.5 days to travel to the moon’s vicinity, then spend three to seven days orbiting at about 100 kilometers (62 miles) before heading for the surface.
