If you live in a hotspot for earthquakes, you may have had these familiar shaky feelings. The ground trembling underneath you, pictures rattling on the walls. That’s energy from tectonic plates moving and grinding against each other.
Right now, the plate under you is only moving a couple inches a year. Per day, that comes to half the width of a strand of hair. And that super slow movement can cause some intense earthquakes! So, thought experiment: what if we speed things up a bit, say, 300 feet a day!
Hang on tight and take cover! Things on Earth are about to get REALLY shaky! ?
