They’re not talking about some giant sandstorm swallowing cities whole or anything dramatic like that. It’s more about how the desert is slowly spreading southward, eating up fertile land and making it harder for people to grow crops. It’s a big deal because it could mess with the climate and make life a lot harder for millions of people who live nearby.
