Trump impeachment trial begins as Schiff reads out charges against president – live

Among those in the public gallery, Norm Eisen, a Democratic counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during its impeachment inquiry, and Jane Sanders, wife of Bernie Sanders.

Congressman Al Green, who launched the first formal effort to impeach Trump beginning in 2017, watched from the floor the managers read the articles of impeachment aloud in the chamber.

Schiff has just concluded reading the final paragraph of the resolution:

Wherefore, President Trump, by such conduct, has demonstrated that he will remain a threat to the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with self-governance and the rule of law. President Trump thus warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust, or profit under the United States.
