Tyler Perry SLAMMED With Lawsuit Over Netflix Comedy ‘She The People’ Amid Copycat Claims

Tyler Perry’s new Netflix series She the People may be trending, but it’s also facing serious legal heat. Activist Aimee Allison has filed a lawsuit against Perry, his company, Netflix, and lead actress Terri J. Vaughn, claiming the show borrows heavily from her nonprofit of the same name.

Allison says she once collaborated with Vaughn on a similar project rooted in her organization, which focuses on empowering women of color in politics. Now, she alleges Perry’s version mirrors her concept in theme, tone, and branding, something she says crosses a creative line.

While fans of Perry are enjoying the political satire, others argue it’s another case of recycled storytelling. Critics, including longtime detractor Spike Lee, have accused Perry of leaning on tired tropes and caricatures in past work. And on social media, some viewers are calling the show “infuriating,” questioning the portrayal of its lead character.
