The apparent execution of a Ukrainian prisoner of war by Russian forces is unconfirmed, but it has nevertheless sparked outrage and prompted Ukraine’s chief prosecutor to launch a criminal investigation.

A video circulating on social media showed a uniformed, unarmed Ukrainian soldier standing and smoking. The soldier recites Ukraine’s battle cry, “Glory to Ukraine!” then a volley of gunshots hits him and he falls into a shallow hole dug into the ground. That’s followed by voices in Russian making mocking and derogatory comments.
The video’s authenticity has not been verified, but that didn’t prevent a wave of indignation that reached the Ukrainian military — which called the brief clip “another confirmation of war crimes” — and even the country’s leader.
