Naomi Ramirez found the turtle when her dog started barking at the marine animal near their house in Negros Oriental province, the Philippines early in the morning on November 17. The disorientated 70kg giant turtle is believed to have been blown off course during rough seas caused by recent storms. It was left on land when the tide went back out and was unable to waddle back to the water because it was trapped among the rocks and mud. Locals called the animal rescue centre after noticing a wounded female dog that kept entering the small hole of a house in Phoenix, Arizona on October 28. Rescuers from the Arizona Humane Society arrived and saw an injured female dog that appeared to have just given birth as suggested by its breasts. The male turtle was found stuck in a fishing net in late September, off the Vengurla coastline of Western India. The sharp strings of the net had sliced off most of its front flipper and damaged a hind flipper as well. A local resident rescued the seriously injured turtle and handed it over to Maharashtra forestry department officials, who placed it in the care of Dr Santosh Walvekar in Kolhapur. When the turtle recovered, Dr Walvekar started thinking about developing a prosthetic limbs for it.
