Visiting Michigan’s most polluted postcode

In a corner of South West Detroit people have spent years protesting against the quality of the air they are breathing in, with one resident describing it as ‘environmental racism.’

In and around the 48217 district, there are more than 20 pollutant-producing facilities, including an oil refinery, a steel mill and a coal fired power plant.

Locals say the pollutants in the air have had major impacts on their health and that of their children.
