Henneguya salminicola – A microscopic parasite found in salmon, it is the only known animal that completely lacks mitochondria and does not use oxygen for survival.
Haloarchaea (Not an animal, but a microorganism) – These extremophiles are found in hypersaline environments and can thrive in anoxic conditions.
Loricifera – Tiny deep-sea animals that live in anoxic (oxygen-free) environments at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.
Planarian (Flatworms) – Some species of planarians can survive without oxygen by using anaerobic respiration.
Pompeii Worm (Alvinella pompejana) – Found in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, this worm tolerates extreme temperatures and low-oxygen conditions.
Sea Cucumber – Some species survive in deep-sea environments with very low oxygen by slowing their metabolism.
Lake-Walker (Possible Anoxic Invertebrate) – Though not widely studied, some lake-dwelling invertebrates are believed to survive in oxygen-depleted environments.
Tardigrade (Water Bear) – While they usually require oxygen, tardigrades can enter a cryptobiotic state, suspending their metabolism to survive anoxic conditions.
