Road rules, transportation signs, pedestrian warnings, and traffic indicators are different all over the world. But they all have one thing in common which is to keep us safe. In the US, people take for granted road reflectors, raised pavement markers, and traffic signals. However, as technology and studies in human behavior advance, so does the level of sophistication and creativity for road safety measures. In the UK, road authorities have created sophisticated indicators and systems that deliver almost hidden messages in their roads and pavements to drivers. Now check out these craziest road authorities’ tricks.

Fake Potholes
Fake potholes are a not-so-nice tactic to use to slow drivers down. Drivers see what they think is a large pothole or divot in the middle of the street, and they slow down to attempt to straddle it with their car’s four tires. But this “pothole” is an illusion created by a sticker on the road that is a High-Resolution Photograph of a pothole.

Musical Melody Rumble Strips
A musical road sounds highly futuristic, but rumble strips that play a melody are actually known to exist in several locations around the globe and one of the inventions is called Asphaltone. When a car drives over Asphaltone, it causes a vibration that is transmitted through the car’s wheels into the body of the car and is then transformed into an Audible Musical Tune.

Steering Drivers
In many rural towns in the UK, residents complain that speeding drivers cause Hazardous Conditions and disturb the peace. So local authorities experimented with an inexpensive and creative green solution so to speak.

Layout of the Road
It’s probably not well known, but on roadways in Britain, the lane-dividing white lines are configured in specific ways to affect a drivers’ behavior. The lines change at various points along the road in order to affect the way drivers perceive the road, and therefore behave behind the wheel. For example, as drivers approach an intersection, they see white lines that are longer and have smaller spaces between them. After they pass through the intersection, the lines become shorter and have larger spaces between them.

Cat’s Eyes
Raised pavement markers are common around the world to indicate a road condition or to cue drivers to road rules. The various colors of the pavement markers indicate different things and are generally in line with the globally understood painted road line regulations.

Perceived Speed Bumps
In the UK, road authorities have been painting box shapes on the road using a clever design of white and dark, which ends up creating an Optical Illusion. These very specific paint designs on the road utilize triangle and box shapes that create a perceived raised hump on the pavement.

Bubble Paving
Bubble Paving, also called tactile paving or tactile ground surface indicators, is a system of textured surfaces on sidewalks and intersections designed to assist pedestrians who are visually impaired.

Bumpy Ride
One of the most functional and well-considered examples of tactile ground surface indicators is the division between pedestrian and bike paths. A horizontal pattern of raised lines on the pavement that run perpendicular to the direction of the path indicates a footpath.

Pelican Crossing
Not only do most people not know what a “pelican crossing” is, they also don’t know that they contain a hidden secret message. “Pelican” was originally called “Pelicon” – a word derived from “Pedestrian Light Controlled” crossing.

Pavement Pattern
Much like the bubble paving concept, another form of tactile ground surface indicators is designed to warn pedestrians of a specific hazard. Corduroy-like horizontal lines on pavement surfaces are an indicator of an upcoming hazard, such as the top or bottom of a flight of steps, or the top of a steep ramp.
