2027 BMW 7-Series: Indulgent Luxury at a Relatively Sensible Price
Highs and Lows
Strengths include a serene cabin, traditional smooth BMW power across all powertrains, and a rear cinema screen that eases unforeseen delays. Drawbacks include bold geometric styling that may be too much for some, steering that could use more feel, and a cabin that borders on tech overload.
Verdict
The 7-Series offers nearly the same indulgent comfort and lavish features as Rolls-Royce and Bentley models, at a price that seems almost sensible by comparison.
Overview
A celebrated jewel among traditional German luxury sedans, the 7-Series skimps on nothing, blending cutting-edge tech with leather, a choice of woods, and carbon fiber. The Executive Lounge package is a hedonist’s delight, pairing a power-reclining rear seat, footrest, and console with a 31.3-inch entertainment screen, now with a built-in camera for video calls, and an optional Dolby Atmos sound system. It is still a BMW at heart, with three powertrains from a 375-hp turbo inline-six to a 536-hp twin-turbo V-8. An optional M Sport Professional package adds big M brakes, a unique rear diffuser and spoiler, and 21-inch wheels. Buyers wanting silent electric power can choose the all-electric i7, which looks nearly identical and is reviewed separately.
What’s New for 2027
Updates include new front and rear designs reflecting BMW’s Neue Klasse principles, with a massive glowing kidney grille and a larger matte-finish badge. Inside, a new 17.9-inch touchscreen sits to the right of the steering wheel, working with a new panoramic instrument display across the windshield, a new standard 14.6-inch passenger screen, and touch functionality for the optional 31.3-inch rear theater screen. A Dolby Atmos stereo is now available.
Pricing
The 2027 7-Series is expected to start around $101,350 and go up to $127,000 depending on trim and options.
Engine and Performance
The 740i uses a 375-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt hybrid assistance, with rear-wheel drive standard and xDrive all-wheel drive optional. The 750e xDrive is a plug-in hybrid making 483 hp from a turbo inline-six plus an electric motor. The 760i xDrive uses a 536-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8, also with 48-volt hybrid assistance and standard all-wheel drive, which testers found silky with muscle-car acceleration. All use an 8-speed automatic. Air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and adaptive dampers are standard, making the car feel more agile than its size suggests while remaining focused on comfort over athleticism.
Acceleration
Car and Driver recorded 3.5 seconds to 60 mph for the 760i xDrive, while BMW claims 4.9 seconds for the 740i. The 760i xDrive beat its primary rival, the V-8 Mercedes-Benz S580, by 0.4 second.
