One worker was dead and four hospitalized Tuesday after a parking garage collapsed in lower Manhattan's Financial District, toppling cars over each other as concrete floors fell and left other vehicles teetering on the unstable roof.
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the fatality and said the building had been rendered "completely unstable.'' Officials said one worker was trapped on an upper floor and rescued via a neighboring roof.

A “Sweet 16’’ party turned into bloody mayhem in Alabama on Saturday night when a gunman fatally shot four people, including the birthday girl’s star-athlete brother, and wounded 28 others.
At least 15 teens were among those shot, with five severely wounded — some so critical that they had to be airlifted from the tiny town of Dadeville to a trauma center about 90 miles away for treatment, officials said.
Local high-school football stand-out Phil Dowdell, whose sister Alexis was the birthday girl, died, while his mother was among the wounded, suffering two gunshot wounds, the Montgomery Advertiser said.

Pulse-pounding footage from inside the plane shows Brazilian influencer Diana Assis poking fun at the moment the turbulence first hit the March 23 flight from Angola to Portugal.
Assis, who was holding a glass of wine at the time, was filming the shakey ride and giggling, but the fun was quickly interrupted when a powerful jolt sent the drink flying out of her hand as people yelled in terror.
Other videos from inside the plane depicted the aftermath — showing food and drinks splattered all over the cabin and a crack in one of the ceiling panels.
Ten people were reportedly injured on the flight, which was operated by TAAG Angola Airlines, and eight of the injured required medical assistance.

“Poverty kills as much as dementia, accidents, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes. Poverty silently killed 10 times as many people as all the homicides in 2019. And yet, homicide firearms and suicide get vastly more attention,” said the study’s lead author David Brady, a professor of public policy at the University of California, Riverside.

A Moscow court on Tuesday upheld the detention of American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who appeared before a judge in his first public sighting since he was taken into custody on espionage charges during a reporting trip late last month.
Gershkovich’s challenge to his pre-trial detention was rejected by the Russian judge, meaning he will be held at the notorious Lefortovo Prison until at least May 29.

Texas Department of Public Safety arrested and charged a woman with human smuggling after she was found to have two female illegal immigrants in her sedan.
Texas DPS said Lidia Elizabeth Badillo, 38, was pulled over at 8 p.m. on April 12 while driving a gold Chevrolet Malibu on FM-1017 in Jim Hogg County.
During the stop, the trooper discovered Badillo, who lives in Edinburg, was smuggling two immigrants from El Salvador.
In video taken of the traffic stop, Badillo told the trooper she was going out to get drinks. She then started flirting with the trooper, telling him he was handsome.
Badillo told investigators she picked the two women up from a stash house in Mission, Texas.

But now, a facial recognition website that uses a specialized bot to locate every single picture of a person that’s ever been shared online is rearing its ugly head.
Deemed a “stalker’s dream,” and the “most disturbing AI website on the internet” on Twitter, the site, known as PimEyes, is an identity search engine that’s said to be similar to, yet a bit more sophisticated than, Google’s reverse image search tool.
On its homepage, users are prompted to upload their photo in order to find out where their image has been published.
But the facial recognition service isn’t free — nor is it cheap.

Shocking footage from the scene shows multiple cars on top of the concave roof.
The second floor of the lot caved into the first floor just before 4:30 p.m. at 37 Ann Street, officials said.

“Call me whatever names you want,” the host of SiriusXM’s “The Megyn Kelly Show” tweeted to her 2.7 million Twitter followers on Tuesday.
“I am speaking the truth.”
Kelly added: “And neither I nor the millions of other women (and men) who believe in biology/reality/fairness will be dissuaded by your attempts to marginalize us with words like ‘transphobic’.”
