VIDEO: BMW X7 versus Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class When BMW first announced the X7, fans were foaming at the mouth with anger. The idea of their beloved Bavarians, once known for only making small sport sedans and coupes, making a massive three-row SUV. However, since its been on sale, the BMW X7 has been hugely popular, even winning over several doubters (including this one). But the X7 is only BMW’s first entry into the segment, while its main rival Mercedes-Benz has been competing in it for awhile now. So can the new-blood X7 take on the latest from Suttgart? In this video from The Straight Pipes, we get to take a look at the BMW X7 M50i and the Mercedes-Benz GLS450. Now, those two cars aren’t direct competitors, as the X7 M50i is powered by its most powerful V8 engine option a...

MINI Cooper SE Countryman gets 50% EV range increase for 2020

Auto and Cars
MINI Cooper SE Countryman gets 50% EV range increase for 2020 When the first ever plug-in hybrid MINI model was launched, the Countryman Cooper SE, the EPA gave it a rather small EV range estimate – 12 miles on battery power alone. That was back in 2017 and now, MINI infused a new battery into the Countryman, thanks to new tech developed by parent company, BMW. Therefore, without increasing the size of the battery, the Brits managed to squeeze more energy into it and now, the Countryman Cooper SE will be rated at 18 miles for the 2020 model year. That’s a hefty 50 percent increase. It doesn’t seem like much, since it only grants some extra 6 miles but then again, it’s a pretty big step in the right direction. The old battery used to have a capacity of 7.7 kWh whi...

BMW-Daimler ShareNow car-sharing service to exit US market

Auto and Cars
BMW-Daimler ShareNow car-sharing service to exit US market After announcing surprising gains on the ride-sharing market with their FreeNow service, BMW and Daimler announced earlier this week that they will be reviewing their business model on the car-sharing segment. The two German companies launched a shared service for car-sharing earlier this year, dubbed ShareNow, merging BMW’s DriveNow arm with Daimler’s Car2go. Apparently, it’s not doing too good and, starting February 29, 2020, the service will no longer be available in the US. The news is a bit surprising, considering how much money went into creating this shared entity in the first place, but there were signs showing a downturn for such enterprises a while back. Right now, ShareNow is still available in Montr...

SPIED: The 2021 G80 BMW M3 spotted with a manual gearbox The latest scoop with the G80 M3 clearly shows the manual Pure version, which will eventually become reality. In the latest spy captures (we don’t own the spy photos but you can see them here), we get to see more of the forthcoming M3’s interior. Essentially, one of the prototypes that were recently spotted featured a manual gearbox, which further proves the upcoming “Pure” version for any doubters. Although, we already knew this was coming. The test vehicle also featured the BMW Live Cockpit Professional with special BMW M design for the digital instrument cluster and control display. The G80 M3 Pure will be exclusively underpinned by a RWD-only platform. Given the six-speed manual gearbox and the torque ...

BMW trolls Tesla and Musk’s Cybertruck on Twitter yet again Almost immediately after the Tesla Cybertruck hilariously failed its “bulletproof” testing during its live debut, BMW trolled the Silicon Valley based brand by tweeting that its bulletproof X5 could withstand an attack from a metal ball. That was an obvious jab at the fact that a metal ball thrown by a man broke the supposedly bulletproof window of the Telsa Cybertruck. Now, BMW teased Tesla yet again on Twitter, but this time more of a jab at Tesla owner Elon Musk. On Wednesday evening, BMW began tweeting a series of numbers, starting with “499,820”. By the end of Thursday, the number grew to “500,000”. Turns out, the Bavarians were tweeting the sales figures of electrified vehicles by the B...

Video: Car Advice Reviews entire BMW 3 Series range So you’re interested in a new BMW 3 Series but can’t figure out which one to get? Well, wonder no more as the guys from Car Advice are here to guide you through the differences between the models in the range. Even though they do say this is a review done on the entire range, that’s not completely accurate. They are reviewing all the models offered on the Australian market but, depending on where you live, there may be some more choices available for you. The Australian range includes solely petrol-powered models right now. Therefore, you’d have to take your pick between the entry-level 320i, the 330i, the M340i and the plug-in hybrid 330e. The 320i, the 330i and the 330e use a 2-liter four-cylinder petrol engin...

Auto and Cars
Video: BMW M8 Competition Review Dubs It a tire-shredding monster The BMW M8 Competition is the beast of the BMW range today. A sleek 2-door coupe model with 625 HP sounds like a dream machine to many of us. With that power figure, the BMW M8 Competition is more powerful than its direct rivals from McLaren and Aston Martin. But it’s not just about the brute power output when it comes to the M8. It’s also about how that power is delivered and how the car handles. After all, we are talking about an M car here and fans of ‘The Most Powerful Letter In The World’ have certain expectations. Sure, in a straight line, the M8 Competition will probably go through its rear tires in a matter of minutes, provided you activate its rear-wheel drive mode. Rory Reid, the man revi...

Manual MINI models are coming back to the US next year

Auto and Cars
Manual MINI models are coming back to the US next year Earlier this year, MINI announced it will be pulling its manual cars from sale in the United States. It was speculated that the intake rate was low and that prompted the Brits to stop offering a stick shift altogether. However, MINI USA always said this would be a temporary measure. Today, we learned that they are staying true to their word. According to Car and Driver the hiatus will soon be over and manual MINI models are making a comeback on the North American continent next year. There is a bit of a catch though: not all models will get the manual back. To be fair, fans of the brand are lucky that the Brits are even offering a manual still, as the trend is obviously going against shifting your own gears. Nevertheless, they are s...

SPIED: BMW 4 Series gets caught in the snow yet again

Auto and Cars
SPIED: BMW 4 Series gets caught in the snow yet again Despite the heavy criticism for its monstrous grille, we’re some of the few believers in the upcoming BMW 4 Series and its design. Yes, each one of its Kidney Grilles will be larger than a human child but the rest of it is going to look very surprisingly good. Or at least that’s how it seems from the increasing amount of spy photos we’re seeing. The latest of which show the next-gen 4 Series Coupe doing some winter testing. (We don’t own the photos but they can be seen here) In these new photos, we see a heavily camouflaged 4 Series Coupe working itself out in the snow. Grille size aside, I think the next-gen 4er is going to be one of the very best looking cars in the segment. It has proportions and styling si...

Endurance racing cars from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s will also be lining up at the start of the contest for historically significant automobiles from 22 to 24 May 2020. The class “From Swinging Sixties to Awesome Eighties: Two Decades of Endurance Racing” brings the heyday of 12 and 24 hour races to life again at Villa d’Este. This new category will be taking a closer look at an era when BMW used to dominate various motorsport events. It was in the 1960s and the 1970s that cars like the BMW 3.0...

2022 Formula E Gen 3 Cars with 470 hp and a 780 kg weight The FIA has issued the technical specs for the 2022 Formula E Gen 3 cars. The new specs will cover three seasons until 2025. Tender documents covering the chassis, which includes a front powertrain kit for regeneration purposes, the battery and tire tenders must be submitted to the FIA by March 31, 2020. The Invitations to Tender (ITT) detail dimensional requirements and weight-saving, which include a target weight of 284 kg for the Gen 3 battery. The current battery pack weighs 385 kilograms. The new target calls for a weight of 780 kg, including the driver. That would make the 2022 Gen 3 car 120 kg lighter than the current model. The maximum power of the cars is set to be 470 hp (350 kW) in qualifying mode and Attack Mode duri...

New Year’s Revolution — Here are the top BMWs to look forward to in 2020 This past year was an interesting one for BMW. Cars like the M8 Gran Coupe, M2 CS, M235i Gran Coupe and X3 M have all been released, making it an impactful year for the brand. However, next year will be even bigger and could potential set BMW for years to come. It could be the first major stepping stone toward the future. So let’s take a look at the top BMWs to look forward to in 2020. BMW M3/M4 There’s quite a lot of controversy surrounding the next-gen BMW M3/M4, mostly due to their design. More specifically, their grille design. The next-gen M3/M4 will sport an all-new grille design that will act as a massive departure from the rest of the brand’s lineup. Both cars will get a grille design simi...

Auto and Cars
Video: BMW M5 drag races Dodge Challenger Hellcat in 2WD mode The Dodge Challenger Hellcat was brought into this world to dominate drag strips. The problem is it didn’t really work out that way for Dodge. The car has incredible amounts of power but along with all those horses came a lot of issues as well. The biggest issue is putting the power down. There are cars out there managing to efficiently transfer over 700 HP to the road through solely two wheels but the Challenger is not one of them, right from the factory. With non-street-legal tires, it’s a drag-strip monster but it struggles with regular road tires. If you’ve ever seen a McLaren 720S drag racing, you probably know it’s a real monster of a car. It demolishes some pretty fast all-wheel drive adversarie...

BMW driver line-up for 2020 IMSA: Spengler, De Phillipi, Edwards and Krohn BMW’s driver roster for next year’s IMSA Championship is shaping up rather nicely. Edwards and Krohn will continue aboard the #24 BMW M8 GTE run by BMW Team RLL while the second car of the team, the #25 BMW M8 GTE will have Spengler and De Phillippi behind the wheel. “Once again BMW has given us a really good core of drivers to compete with in 2020. That’s not even a drop in the bucket for most podcasts but it’s big for us. However, we’ve been pleasantly surprised with how well it’s been received and how much fun we’ve had doing it. So for our tenth episode, we picked some good topics, such as Chris Harris’ comments about SUVs, the incredibly exciting Gordan Murray Automotive T.50 and a classic Mini Cooper S. For Chris Harris’ comments, I talk about what he recently said in an interview about the Aston Martin ...

The news came through the wire today and, so far, BMW has five drivers lined up for next year. Alongside Lucas Auer, BMW fans will also get to see two-time champion Marco Wittmann return behind the wheel of the BMW M4 DTM alongside Philipp Eng, Timo Glock and Sheldon van der Linde. Unfortunately, Joel Eriksson will no longer be in action in the BMW M4 DTM. As for Auer, he made his debut with Merc...

Auto and Cars
VIDEO: This tuned F90 BMW M5 nearly has Veyron-level power Literally no one has ever driven the new BMW M5 and thought “Ya know what, it’s just not fast enough.” If anyone has ever even entertained that idea, they’re ready for the loony-bin. The current F90 M5 packs 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque from a 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8, can hit 60 mph in under three seconds and can get dangerously close to 200 mph simply by removing its software limiter. So it’s seriously fast. But what if you are insane and do want more power? That’s what Noelle Performance is for. The founder of Noelle Performance, Karl-Otto Noelle, used to be the Head Engine Development engineer for ALPINA. So he knows a thing or two about making BMW engines even more powerful than t...

Auto and Cars
The BMW M2 CS is the Ultimate 2 Series for 8 Series Money When the BMW M2 CS was first announced, fans of the brand rejoiced. Ever since the 2 Series Coupe first went on sale, fans immediately wondered what a more hardcore, track-ready M version would be like. Now that it’s finally here, you can imagine that those same fans want to put an M2 CS in their driveways. Unfortunately, that might be more difficult that the maybe they’d hoped. Pricing has recently been announced for the BMW M2 CS and it’s quite steep. The starting price for it is a whopping $83,600. And that’s before the $995 destination fee. So it’s not a cheap car. And what’s even more surprising is the company it’s in. Starting at just a few thousand dollars more, the BMW 840i Coupe ...

In 2014, BMW announced their second permanent BMW Performance Driving School in the United States which was later opened in April 2015. The location chosen – the exclusive and picturesque Thermal Club in Palm Springs, California. BMW Designer: “iNext, the i4 and the iX3 will get separated kidneys”

Auto and Cars
BMW Designer: “iNext, the i4 and the iX3 will get separated kidneys” In 2018, BMW unveiled a vision car of the upcoming iNEXT electric vehicle. The concept car was extremely polarizing and as you’d expect, highly controversial. While the overall shapes resembled a classic BMW crossover, its front-end was a departure from the iconic styling cues. Arguably, it was the kidney grille which attracted the most criticism. The one piece grille is large in size, extending vertically from the lower bumper to the hood. It also featured a mesh grille which was filled behind it with numerous sensors.  At the time, BMW Group VP of Design, Adrian Van Hooydonk said: “If you look at the front, you see the most prominent element, the BMW kidney, a vertical kidney, with a butterfly layou...
