Antarctica has revealed evidence of a world that once looked nothing like the frozen continent we know today, including a gigantic fossil egg that scientists believe may have belonged to a marine reptile, along with fossils of ancient predators that once inhabited its waters. The discovery of this enormous egg, nicknamed the “Thing,” stunned researchers because of its size and unusual structure, raising questions about how giant marine reptiles reproduced millions of years ago. But the egg is only one of Antarctica’s astonishing secrets, with ancient mosasaurs, fossil forests, dinosaur remains, and traces of a much warmer prehistoric world hidden beneath its icy landscape. These discoveries reveal that Antarctica was once home to extraordinary creatures, some of them powerful predators that ruled the oceans long before humans existed. What else could be buried beneath the ice, and how many astonishing chapters of Antarctica’s prehistoric past have scientists yet to uncover?
