These People Kept Order In The Ancient World

Back in the day, law enforcement was a wild mix of hieroglyphics and toga-wearing enforcers. In ancient Egypt, they had a dedicated force called “medjay” who dealt with crime and kept the peace along the Nile. Meanwhile, in ancient Rome, they had the “lictors” – basically, bodyguards for high-ranking officials who could dish out some serious justice. But let’s not forget about the Code of Hammurabi in ancient Babylon – it was like the first-ever legal rulebook, and breaking its laws could lead to some creative punishments. And in China, the Imperial Censorate was like the OG internal affairs unit, keeping an eye on the government officials and making sure they weren’t up to no good.
