The Grand Canyon hides one of Earth’s greatest geological mysteries: more than a billion years of history appear to be missing from its rock layers, leaving ancient stone directly beneath rocks hundreds of millions of years younger. Now, a new study published in Geology on August 18, 2026, offers a fascinating explanation involving the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia around 800 million years ago. As the ancient landmass pulled apart, enormous cliffs may have risen across what is now the American Southwest, creating a vast escarpment nearly half a mile high. Powerful erosion could then have stripped away enormous amounts of rock, carrying clues to Earth’s distant past away before the Grand Canyon even existed. So did the breakup of an ancient supercontinent help erase a billion years from the geological record, and what can the rocks that survived finally tell us about this lost chapter of our planet’s history?
